Practising A1 Movers Reading and Writing Part 6 online
Today’s post, on practising A1 Movers Reading and Writing Part 6, was written by Elsa Canário, a good friend and fellow teacher.
Elsa has a language school in the north of Portugal, English Centre Melgaço.
Like many teachers, Elsa has moved her classes online during this lockdown.
So, Elsa, please share your activity!
“Sure! Here we go!”
With most students taking online lessons keeping them engaged, motivated, and interested in their English lessons can be one of the biggest challenges online teachers face.
Adapting your activities to the virtual classroom is essential to have a positive and productive outcome.
Therefore I decided to create a three- step acitivity for Reading and Writing Part 6.
Step One
On the screen, show learners a picture from A1 Movers Reading and Writing Part 6. (I used this one, from Sample Papers 2, available here.)
Brainstorm vocabulary by asking them questions:
How many dogs are there?
How many children can you see in the car?
What is the girl in the yellow sweater doing?
What is the man in the white beard doing?
What is the woman with the baby wearing around her neck?
What is the baby doing?
What is the man in front of the shop carrying?
What is the girl in the pink T-shirt wearing?
Different learners say their answers to the questions.
Step two – Tell learners that you are removing the picture from screen share in order to test their memory .
Step three – Tell learners to complete the sentences and answer the questions. Then, to write two sentences.
The man is carrying a ……………………… of oranges.
What’s the girl in the yellow sweater got? …………………………….
Complete the sentences.
1 The woman with the baby has ……………………………. around her neck.
2 One person is …………………….. a motorbike.
Answer the questions.
3 What’s the man with the white beard doing? …………………………………
4 Who is in the red car? …………………………………
Now, write two sentences about the picture.
5 …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
6 …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
The aim of this activity was to increase the students’ talking time but also to test their visual memory and to evaluate how well they would perform the task. I was amazed that they remembered all the details about the picture.
And you could repeat this activity with a different picture and this time, ask learners to write one sentence for their classmates to complete and one question for them to answer. They can write these in the chatbox and their classmates can answer them.
Thank you Elsa for letting me share this activity. It can definitely be used online (or in the classroom when we can return there).
