Matching your sentence to A1 Movers Reading and Writing Part 5

A useful and fun way of working on A1 Movers Reading and Writing Part 5 is to ask each student to match only one sentence to the correct part of the story.

Let’s look at the pictures I used in my previous two posts on this part (Win the race and Add more pictures), taken from Sample Papers 2, available here:

https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/Images/young-learners-sample-papers-2018-vol2.pdf

Next, I completed, then printed the sentences to match to the story and cut them up, so that each strip had a sentence.

* I removed the numbers of course!

(By the way, I completed the sentences because I wanted to make this task more accessible and to reinforce the fact that the sentences appear in the same order as the information in the text and that things like word order changes and paraphrasing are something that they need to be aware of).

Here is a pdf version of the sentences for you to use (*remember to cut off the numbers before you use them!)

Then, I ask students to find the same information in the text.  Tell them which number their sentence was (2 of them are examples). This will show them that the sentences appear in the order of the text.

Ask students to notice the paraphrasing between the text and the sentences.

Often, the order of the information changes:

e.g.

Text: The children waited for the rain to stop and ate their sandwiches.  When it was sunny again, the children ran back home.

Sentence: The children had their lunch and then went home when it stopped raining.

And different words are used.

e.g. ate their sandwiches > had their lunch

waited for the rain to stop, When it was sunny again > when it stopped raining

ran back home > went home
