Cambridge English: Movers Reading and Writing Part 5: Which information do we have in both the text and the sentences?

In my previous posts to help prepare for Cambridge English: Movers Part 5 of the Reading and Writing Test , I have talked about the importance of understanding the information given about different people in the story and of understanding paraphrasing.

Now, I want to explore the importance of noticing the information that is in both the story (text) and in the sentences in the Questions.

Whenever I work on training my students to deal with an exam reading text, I stress the importance of locating the answers to the questions in the text.

They should underline the relevant information in the text and write the number of the question in the margin.

This advice also applies to Part 5 of the Movers Reading and Writing Test.

Let’s look at the two Examples in the Sample Paper:

3  Which information do we have in the text and also in the sentences?

First, we locate the part of the text where the information in the sentences appears and underline it and write the number of the question (or Example).  Then, we put a line through the words that are in both the text and the sentence.

The words we have left are the ones we choose from for the gap!

Notice, that in Example 1, there is only 1 word left! – Saturday – which is the word we need for the gap.

For Example 2, we have to understand the change from the 1st person (I, my) to the third person (Jim, I, his…) and the paraphrasing of came > went.  (As I explained in the two previous posts.)

Try this out with your students, using this document:

To help you, here is what the underlining and crossing out might look like:

In my next post, we’ll look at the words that come before and after the gaps in the sentences in Questions 1-10.
